What it is
A resin-bound driveway blends dried decorative aggregate with a clear polyurethane resin, trowelled at 15–18mm over a fully prepared bound base (either freshly laid open-graded asphalt or existing sound tarmac / concrete). Water drains straight through the surface into the base below.
Who it's for
Homeowners who want a clean, contemporary finish with no maintenance headaches — no gravel migrating into the lawn, no weeds pushing through joints, and no ice sheets in winter because water drains through the surface.
When it's needed
When you're upgrading a tired tarmac or concrete drive (resin can be laid over sound existing surfaces), when planning permission requires a permeable finish, or when you want the modern look without the joint maintenance of block paving.
Why professional install matters
Resin-bound is unforgiving of bad base prep. On a poorly prepared base, resin cracks along the base's fault lines within 2–3 years. On the right base, laid at the right thickness, it lasts 15–20 years and looks nearly identical to day one. The finish is only as good as what's underneath — which is where a proper installer earns their fee.
What happens when the job is done cheaply — or left too long.
Resin-bound is the driveway finish most likely to be sold badly and installed worse. It looks simple — pour, trowel, done — but the failures are hidden until they emerge, and by then the whole surface usually has to come up.
Cracking along the base
Laid over cracked or moving tarmac / concrete without repair, resin telegraphs every fault line within 2–3 winters.
Puddling instead of draining
Below 15mm depth or laid over an impermeable base with nowhere for water to go, resin puddles instead of draining through.
Colour fade & yellowing
Cheap resin (aromatic instead of aliphatic UV-stable) yellows within 18 months. Once it goes, it can't be reversed.
Common mistakes we're called out to fix:
- Skipping the primer coat on the base — the resin then debonds and lifts in patches.
- Laying resin over a bound base with no permeable drainage layer or channel — water sits on the base and pushes back up through the resin.
- Wrong aggregate-to-resin ratio — too little resin and stones pluck out under tyres; too much and the surface goes glassy and slippery.
- Laying in temperatures below 5°C or above 25°C — cure goes wrong either way.
- Using aromatic resin instead of aliphatic (UV-stable) — cheaper up-front, ugly by year two.

Base preparation
If overlaying: crack repair, degreasing, primer coat. If new: excavation to depth, geotextile membrane, MOT Type 1 sub-base, fresh open-graded asphalt binder course.

Mixing on site
UV-stable aliphatic resin mixed with pre-dried aggregate in a forced-action mixer at the correct ratio. Colour and aggregate blend chosen at survey stage.

Trowelling at 15–18mm
Laid, trowelled and finished in one continuous pour to avoid trowel lines. Edges cut in against edging kerbs or channel drains.

Foot traffic 4–6 hours, vehicle traffic 24–48 hours depending on weather. Full walkaround, written guarantee and aftercare notes.

UV-stable aliphatic resin only
We only use aliphatic (non-yellowing) resin systems. Costs more, doesn't fade. It's the difference between a driveway that ages gracefully and one that doesn't.

Resin-bound driveways succeed or fail at the base. Here's the detail that separates a driveway you'll be showing off in year eight from one you'll be lifting in year three.
Resin-bound vs resin-bonded — not the same product
Resin-BOUND: aggregate pre-mixed with resin, trowelled at 15–18mm, permeable, smooth-finished. What we install. Long-lasting when done right. Resin-BONDED: a thin layer of resin painted onto a base with dry aggregate scattered on top. Non-permeable, rougher texture, cheaper — and vastly shorter lifespan. We don't recommend or install resin-bonded for driveways.
Base build-up (new install)
Excavate to 200mm depth. Non-woven geotextile membrane. 150mm compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base laid in two courses and whacker-plated. 50mm open-graded asphalt binder course laid hot. Cure for 48 hours minimum. Primer coat. Resin laid on top. This is the specification most cheap installers cut corners on.
Base assessment (overlay)
Existing tarmac or concrete drives can be overlaid if they are sound, well-drained and not moving. We check for: hollow-sounding areas (delamination), cracks wider than 3mm, drainage back to the house, and general levels. Overlay-suitable bases save cost. Unsuitable bases must be lifted — no primer will save a moving base.
Aggregate & colour selection
Blends typically use 2–5mm sized dried aggregate — quartz, granite, marble or recycled glass, alone or mixed. Warmer tones (Autumn Gold, Roman Silver, Bahama Beige) suit stone-built and traditional homes. Cooler greys and blacks (Charcoal, Baltic) suit modern renders and grey window frames. Samples brought to the site visit.
Edging & drainage
Resin driveways need a physical edge restraint — usually a concrete-haunched kerb, block paving border or steel edging. ACO channel drains cut in at the property threshold catch surface water at the door, even though the resin itself is permeable.
Aftercare & lifespan
Occasional light pressure-wash (below 100 bar, wide fan) removes surface debris. Do not use metal-bladed snow shovels or salt directly — plastic shovels only, and a gritting sand rather than rock salt if needed. Expected lifespan 15–20 years on a properly prepared base with aliphatic resin. Repairs are possible in patches if damage occurs.
