There is no single 'best' driveway — the right finish depends on your budget, the slope of your plot, how much traffic the drive sees and how the front of your house is styled. Here's how each option we install actually behaves once it's in the ground. ### Block paving driveways Individual concrete or clay blocks laid on a 50mm bed of grit sand over compacted MOT Type 1. Blocks lock together mechanically once kiln-dried sand is brushed into the joints and vibrated in. Strengths: repairable (lift a single block, re-lay it), huge range of colours and laying patterns (herringbone at 45° is the strongest for vehicle traffic), classic look that suits period and new-build homes equally. Best for: homeowners who want kerb appeal that lasts 25+ years and don't mind a wash-down and re-sand every few years. ### Tarmac (asphalt) driveways Rolled hot in two courses — a base course for structure and a top course for finish.
