A complete driveway installation covering the surface finish you choose — block paving, tarmac, resin-bound or gravel — plus the sub-base, edgings and drainage underneath. Every job includes full groundwork so you're not left with a pretty surface sitting on unstable ground.

Why professional install matters
A driveway is 80% what's underneath and 20% what you see. Skimping on excavation, sub-base depth or edge restraint is the single biggest reason drives fail inside 3–5 years. We prep every drive to the depth the surface actually needs — and we do it with our own in-house crew (James plus four skilled tradesmen), not subcontractors.
What happens when the job is done cheaply — or left too long.
A poorly installed driveway rarely fails all at once. It sinks a little, weeds start creeping through joints, water pools where it shouldn't, and by year four you're paying to have it lifted and re-laid. The cheapest quote almost always becomes the most expensive job.
Sunken paving & tyre ruts
Shallow sub-base and no compaction. Cars sit heavier than people realise — 1.5+ tonnes on the same two strips of paving every day.
Standing water & ice
Poor falls and no drainage mean puddles that turn into ice sheets in December. Freeze-thaw then splits joints and cracks resin.
Weeds, moss & joint failure
Kiln-dried sand skipped or the wrong grade used. Joints wash out within a season and the whole surface loosens.
Common mistakes we're called out to fix:
- Laying new paving directly over an old concrete slab without breaking it out — traps water and guarantees future movement.
- Skipping the geotextile membrane between sub-grade and sub-base — clay pushes up through the stone and heaves the surface.
- No linear drain at the threshold — planning permission requires water be dealt with on your property, not the highway.
- Undersized MOT Type 1 depth for the vehicle load — 100mm is fine for a footpath, not a driveway carrying an SUV.
- Using tarmac edges instead of a proper concrete haunch — edges break away the first time a wheel clips them.

Block paving cut to pattern, tarmac rolled hot in two courses, resin trowelled at the correct depth, or gravel laid over a bound base. Kiln-dried sand and sealing where relevant.

There is no single 'best' driveway — the right finish depends on your budget, the slope of your plot, how much traffic the drive sees and how the front of your house is styled. Here's how each option we install actually behaves once it's in the ground.
Block paving driveways
Individual concrete or clay blocks laid on a 50mm bed of grit sand over compacted MOT Type 1. Blocks lock together mechanically once kiln-dried sand is brushed into the joints and vibrated in. Strengths: repairable (lift a single block, re-lay it), huge range of colours and laying patterns (herringbone at 45° is the strongest for vehicle traffic), classic look that suits period and new-build homes equally. Best for: homeowners who want kerb appeal that lasts 25+ years and don't mind a wash-down and re-sand every few years.
Tarmac (asphalt) driveways
Rolled hot in two courses — a base course for structure and a top course for finish. Edges haunched with concrete against a physical edge restraint. Best laid in dry weather above 5°C. Strengths: fastest to install, seamless appearance, very forgiving of minor movement, cost-effective on larger drives. Weakness: fuel and hydraulic oil will soften it — not ideal if you regularly work on cars on the drive.
Resin-bound driveways
A blend of dried aggregate and clear polyurethane resin trowelled at 15–18mm over a fully bound, prepared base (either fresh open-graded asphalt or existing sound tarmac/concrete). Permeable — water drains straight through the surface. Strengths: SuDS-compliant on new drives, no loose stone, no weeds through the surface, huge choice of aggregate colours. Requires a properly prepared base — this is where cheap resin jobs fail. Full page: see /services/resin-driveways.
Gravel driveways
Decorative aggregate over a compacted sub-base, retained by concrete-haunched edges and often laid over a gravel grid to stop migration. Simple, quick, cost-effective. Strengths: cheapest to install, excellent drainage, easy to top up. Weakness: needs raking occasionally, gravel migrates without a grid, not ideal for steep drives.
Groundwork, drainage & sub-base
Every drive we install includes: excavation to the correct depth for the finish (typically 200–250mm for block paving vehicular use), non-woven geotextile membrane over the sub-grade, compacted MOT Type 1 in layers with a whacker plate, concrete-haunched edge restraints, and drainage taken to a soakaway or channel drain at the threshold in line with planning guidance for impermeable surfaces over 5m².
Residential vs commercial driveways
Residential drives are typically 100mm bound surface over 150mm sub-base. Commercial and holiday-park applications (we've laid drives and yards for Coastal & Country Holiday Parks across the North East) usually require a 200mm+ sub-base, heavier-duty edging and often a bound base course under resin or block.
